Yuba report 10-21

Beautiful couple of days on the Yuba. I was interested to see how the river has pushed itself around after last winter, definitely some changes and new looks to the topography of the riverbed. The water is gin clear at the moment. The salmon are beginning their spawn. It is still early, but the fish in the system seem to be working in a few of the popular areas at this time. There is a very good dry fly rise in the morning. Fish are chowing on baetis and midges early in the day. They are also eating the occasional Caddis and mayfly as well. The rising is most pronounced in the flats, which is like spring creek fishing. It takes very little to put the fish down in these areas when wade fishing. These areas are best fished from a boat or raft, feeding line downriver to the fish. There are some very nice fishing rising! Lots of fish in the system, of all sizes . . . Sign of a healthy river.

I went in at Hammon Grove and worked up to the high tip of the island below the old coffer dam, so I definitely got my exercise in. That is a walk I could not have made before my knee replacement. It was pain free today after my knee replacement . . . What a difference!

The picture below shows a bug hatch coming off that I could not identify. The pictures sucks, I know. I have a video of them, but it would not upload. Body shape similar to a March Brown, but more of a white or cream color. They were hatching in fast riffle water. Lots of them coming off, but the fish were not on them. Anyone know what this bug is?

There can be Steelhead below the Deguerre Dam in the next few months, if you can get there.

There are some beautiful runs for wading for Steelhead in the first mile or so, below the dam.


It is nice to hear that the Lower Yuba River has some fall-run king salmon.

It will be a good thing for the health of the river.


The pristine Lower Yuba River is a special fishery.

It can have wild Rainbow trout, wild Steelhead, wild King salmon, American Shad, and Stripers at times.
